Privacy Policy

PageLilt is a Chrome extension that reads webpages and user-selected text aloud. This policy explains what information the extension accesses and how it is used.
Information the extension accesses
When a user invokes PageLilt, the extension accesses readable text, page structure, the page title, the page language, and the position of the current sentence in the active tab. It uses this information only to provide text-to-speech, semantic reading, user-directed area selection, sentence highlighting, optional page movement (including Smart Follow), selection reading, and click-to-jump navigation.
For area selection and click-to-jump, the extension processes the element or sentence selected by the user. This interaction is used only to choose content or move playback to the requested sentence. It is not logged or sent to the developer.
Local processing and storage
PageLilt does not send page text to the developer's servers. The latest active reading text and playback position are stored only in Chrome's local extension storage so the session can be restored after the background reader sleeps or Chrome is reopened. For up to 30 recently read pages, the extension also keeps a sanitized page address, progress metadata, and short sentence anchors locally. It does not store a separate full-page copy for each history entry. This session and history data is not synchronized to the user's other devices.
The extension separately stores user preferences—selected voice, automatic voice choice, favorite voices, reading speed, highlighting choice, highlight color, and page-movement mode—using Chrome's synchronized extension storage.
PageLilt also stores small local-only counters and timestamps for product milestones such as opening the popup, requesting reading, successful speech, reaching ten sentences or sixty seconds, resuming, extraction failure, and content-script recovery. These diagnostics contain no page address, page title, or page text. They are not synchronized and are never transmitted to the developer.
Speech engines
Speech is produced through Chrome's text-to-speech API using voices available in Chrome, the operating system, or an installed speech engine. A voice identified by its provider as network-backed may process text according to that provider's privacy terms. PageLilt labels on-device and network-backed voices when Chrome exposes that information and does not operate its own speech server.
Permissions
- Active tab and website access: Read the page selected by the user, including readable content in embedded frames.
- Scripting: Extract and structure readable text, let the user choose a reading area, highlight the active sentence, and enable click-to-jump.
- Text to speech: Speak the requested content.
- Storage: Save voice and playback preferences through Chrome sync, restore the latest session, keep local progress metadata for recently read pages, and retain content-free local reliability counters.
- Context menus: Offer a command to read selected text.
Data retention and deletion
Page content and user-directed interactions are not retained by the developer. The locally stored active reading session is replaced when the user starts reading new content. Recent-page progress is limited to 30 local entries and older entries are automatically removed. Local diagnostic counters remain only on the device. Users can remove all locally stored session data, history metadata, diagnostics, and synchronized preferences by clearing the extension's data or uninstalling PageLilt.
Limited Use compliance
PageLilt's use and transfer of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Information is used only to provide or improve the extension's single user-facing purpose and is not used for advertising, profiling, or unrelated purposes.
Changes to this policy
If the extension's data practices change, this policy and the Chrome Web Store privacy disclosures will be updated before the changed practices are released.
